Nicky Wire
Death of a Polaroid
Book design

Death of a Polaroid contains over 500 photographs from the collection of Nicky Wire, bass player with Manic Street Preachers. The book documents the band’s career over two decades in photographs by such photographers as Rankin, Kevin Cummins and Mitch Ikeda, as well as Wire himself.
The design of the book reflects the ephemeral nature of Polaroids and draws on Wire’s interest in folk and fan art.

Camper | Volvo Ocean Race

2011

Camper
Volvo Ocean Race

Spanish shoe brand Camper has a rich history and a long-standing spirit of adventure, so their entry into the Volvo Ocean Race came as no surprise. Farrow were asked to be Camper's graphic partner for the race.

‘Sailing is like walking on water, leaning on the wind.’ We found everything we needed in this phrase, creating a series of undulating patterns using Camper logos to illustrate air and sea. The look of the boat is in constant flux with different patterns applied to each of the 9 sails, which are used in different combinations depending on the conditions. In partnership with Camper and Emirates Team New Zealand, we designed every graphic element of the VOR70 racing yacht.

In addition to the boat, we worked with technical apparel experts Musto to brand gear for the crew, and with architect Shigeru Ban on the branding for the race pavilion. Images of the boat were used as Camper’s global advertising campaign and the race patterns were used in stores and applied to commercial footwear and clothing.

Molton Brown | Identity programme

2011

Molton Brown
Identity programme

The Molton Brown logotype had remained almost unchanged since the company was founded in 1973. Based on a chiselled engraver's font, Molton Brown felt the logotype was in need of simplification and modernisation. Our solution was to remove the outline, leaving only the highlights, and to draw a new logotype based on this skeleton of negative space. This resulted in a modern, refined logotype that retained the DNA of the original.

We also created a new mark 'The Compass' to replace the original Lotus symbol, this is used as a repeat pattern on store bags and other collateral.

Tennant/Lowe
The Most Incredible Thing
Music packaging

Packaging for the score to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe's ballet 'The Most Incredible Thing', which premiered at Sadler's Wells (London). Based on a short story of the same name, the cover image is based on author Hans Christian Andersen's paper-cut illustrations. The images shown here are of the special limited edition vinyl, which is accompanied by a copy of the original music score signed by Tennant and Lowe.

Oliver Peyton | Royal Academy of Arts | Identity programme

2011

Oliver Peyton
Royal Academy of Arts
Identity programme

Founded in 1768, the Royal Academy of Arts is both a vital part of art history and an active voice in current contemporary art. Therefore, the identity for dining at the RA had to reflect both of these elements. The traditional typographic treatment combined with an ultra bright palette references the historic nature and modern spirit of institution. Each element (wine list, bar menu, stationary, etc) is printed in a different fluorescent colour.

The identity will expand as the various other dining areas within the building are completed.

Also as part of the identity, we have designed special edition wine bottles featuring work by Royal Academicians. Shown here are the Gary Hume and Tracey Emin bottles.

Pet Shop Boys | Yes | Music packaging

2011

Pet Shop Boys
Yes
Music packaging

We actually thought of this more as an identity than an album cover. The tick was obviously inspired by the album’s title ‘Yes’. Reducing the title to a symbol that encompassed the other elements the band had requested just seemed to work; it’s instant and memorable and pop. The tick is made up of eleven coloured squares, one for each track on the album. The coloured blocks continue on the inside of the package where the tick deconstructs and both merges and clashes with photographs of the band.

In addition, we also designed a highly limited edition vinyl version of the album which consisted of the album tracks split over eleven separate vinyl records, each in a coloured sleeve and housed in a smoked Perspex case. When correctly arranged the eleven album sleeves will allow you to make up your own tick, measuring some eight feet in length. This edition was nominated for the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year at London's Design Museum and included in the Best in Book section of the Creative Review Annual in 2010.

Fiell
Identity programme

The identity for publisher Fiell is designed to work in two different ways. On books we have used both the spine and cover to create a highly visible three dimensional logo. This three dimensional form is then echoed in the alternative version of the mark created for use on stationery and in print.

Manic Street Preachers | Lifeblood | Music packaging

Manic Street Preachers
Lifeblood
Music packaging

The image for Lifeblood was produced by pouring gallons of artificial blood over a very sporting model, who was later removed in post production. The main campaign image was deliberately abstract. Clearer images were used inside the packaging.

Levi's | Labeling and packaging system

2011

Levi's
Labeling and packaging system

We were asked by Levi's to rationalise their labeling system, which was somewhat disparate at the time. Our solution resulted in each garment carrying a single label with the same form and layout being used for each product range. The personality of each line was then expressed through the materials and finishing used. This led to a massive saving materials and costs, and them a European environmental award. Although designed initially for Europe only, this system went  on to be used globally.

Pet Shop Boys | Miracles | Music packaging

Pet Shop Boys
Miracles
Music packaging

The song 'Miracles' is all about love and the wonders of nature, hence the images of cherry blossom. We really wanted the sleeve to be perfumed, as the promo versions had been, but by the time we had printed blossom onto every single surface inside and out, dye-cut silhouettes of Neil and Chris into the cover and pressed the record on white vinyl, EMI finally applied the brakes. Well if you don't ask you don't get.

Stephanie Simon | Identity programme

Created from the initials of luxury jeweler Stephanie Simon, the monogram is foil blocked across a suite of materials, and also extended into a repeat pattern. Throughout the brochure, photographic images of the jewelry pieces were manipulated into abstract geometric patterns. Information and a more straightforward image of each piece appears on the back of each page.

The pill style trays for the album 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space' were packed under strict pharmaceutical manufacturing conditions. Each blister contained a 3 inch CD featuring one of twelve tracks which had to be popped through foil in order to be played.

All credits were printed onto a medicine information sheet and contained warnings on the possible side effects of listening to the band.

The album was later reissued, and a new limited edition black version produced.
